This isn't the type of place Yelp Foodies would rate as 5 stars. There. I said it. Bite me. The food isn't Michelin-level at budget store prices. The decor isn't new and trendy. Their hours are not ideal for everyone. You don't get your water refilled in a snap. This is a small, local business that fits the niche of the local older community so well that that is what makes me want to come back. It's not "quick service", more like "slow service". I went alone last week Fri morning for breakfast for the first time as it was one of the few places close to my current location and open at the time (because starting your workday at 6am like me means lunch break is at 10). I was expecting no eye contact, order, eat, and leave like most eating spots on the peninsula. Prices were as I expected due to inflation and HCOL. But this place made me decide to linger and take an actual break. Inside, the staff looked like 1 waitress, 1 waiter, 1 busser/runner, and 1 cook in the back. The waiter and busser had RBF and kept to themselves mostly but their conversations gave an impression that all the staff were family. The waitress is bubbly, has an infectious giggle, and has a talent for reading people that I don't often see. She had a glint in her eye that if I wanted to be a little extroverted and converse with her, she wouldn't mind, but she also didn't push her extroversion on me. As I was eating, the cafe started to get more customers. Many were older local residents who met up here for brunch or coffee and it sounded often like a weekly tradition. The waitress greeted almost everyone at their tables, remembered the names of regulars, and even asked more personal questions to ones she knew than "hi, how's it going?". Stuff like "how's your daughter doing?" "I checked out so-and-so like you suggested!" I didn't get my water refilled immediately because she was connecting with the other tables in meaningful, conscious ways that I have not seen in a long, long time. And I didn't mind at all.

This is one of the better breakfast spots in Redwood City. Chicken fried steak with crispy hashbrowns was delicious. The steak packed a lot of flavor and the gravy added delight to every bite. I added a pancake, but I was sadly disappointed with it compared to the other items. It wasn't light and fluffy, so I would not order it again. Not shown was the white toast, which was extra toasted and buttery. I ate it all because it was the first item to arrive and I was very hungry. I would ask for lightly toasted if I were to order again. The breakfast sandwich was nicely assembled. It had nice flavor and the bread tasted like it was an upgrade compared to the white toast that came with the chicken fried steak. The fruits provided a refreshing ending to the meal. This place can get very busy for breakfast. Service was attentive and quick. Ambiance is casual.

Wow, I moved here two years ago and always as curious to eat here. I am glad my friend wanted breakfast. Omelet was perfect, better than, it was not over cooked. Not oily. I had to corn beef and hash with hash browns and it was perfect. Now this will be my am meeting spot!
